Our Academic / Scholarly Mission
The Richards Center uses its resources to encourage innovative scholarship that addresses the military aspects of the conflict as well as the social, political, economic, and cultural facets of the period. We accomplish this through:
- Supporting a broad range of research by talented, diverse faculty.
- Training doctoral students, the next generation of Civil War-era scholars.
- Editing Civil War History, the principal journal in the field.
- Sponsoring workshops in which scholars present their works in progress
Public Mission
The Richards Center is committed to maintaining a dialogue with the public. We accomplish this through:
- Battlefield study tours in Civil War sites around the country.
- An undergraduate internship at Gettysburg National Military Park and Harpers Ferry National Park.
- A summer institute for schoolteachers to generate new ideas and resources for use in the classroom.
- Workshops and lectures by scholars that are free and open to the public.
- Public lectures and appearances by Richards Center faculty associates at Civil War Roundtables, symposia, and other events around the country.
