Civil War History recently celebrated its fiftieth year as the leading scholarly journal of "the middle period," also known as the Civil War era. Published quarterly, the journal covers not only the American Civil War but also the causes and consequences of the conflict. Its topics include military history, the home front, slavery and abolition, antebellum and Reconstruction politics, and social and cultural developments in mid-nineteenth century America.

In addition to major articles, each issue includes announcements about developments in the field and comprehensive book reviews to help readers keep abreast of the latest scholarship.
